Summer classes are open to everyone, not just members. However, some classes have enrollment constraints, and preregistration is required.

Iain Macdonald, Director of TDI, and Marcus Kauffman, project leader of the Oregon Mass Timber Coalition, will give a presentation about mass timber, what it is, and its projected impact on Oregon’s economic development, followed by a tour of the Emmerson Lab where mass timber is tested and building system prototypes are evaluated. Oregon has become a national leader in this emerging field of mass timber design, manufacturing and construction, and the presenters will discuss the roles of scientific research, communications, regional convening and coordination between state agencies and the universities, and how they are contributing to our state’s quest to become a globally competitive player in the marketplace. Or you may obtain B & C Lot permits at the Reser Stadium pay station. Enter B-3 parking lot from SW 30th St just south of Dryden Hall or from SW Washington Way halfway between SW 30th and SW 35th Streets. The office/seminar room entrance is on the east side of the building and everyone should enter there rather than walking into the lab itself, for safety reasons.

Tour: Majestic Theater

June 30. 10:00 AM – noon.

Built in 1913, the Majestic theater hosted vaudeville, live theater, lectures, and concerts, seemingly finishing life as the Varsity movie house in the late 1970s. It was purchased and resurrected by the city of Corvallis. Now join Parks and Recreation coordinator Rachel Kohler for a journey through the maze-like historic building and learn about the current operations of the theater while being regaled with interesting anecdotes from the past century plus of local theatrical lore.

Walking Tour: Gems of Northern Corvallis

July 8. 10:00 – 11:00AM.

This will be a guided walking tour of two of the most beautiful but largely unknown small parks in the northern part of Corvallis, Brandis Park and the adjoining Forest Glen Natural Area, along with a visit to two nearby wonderful gardens. Some local environmental issues will be discussed. Total walking time between 1/2 and 1 hour. Meet at the top (North end) of 13th St. and bring a walking stick if needed.

Active Class: Learn to Play Pickleball

July 12. 9:00 – 11:00AM.

This class is open to anyone who feels like a beginner. Pickleball paddles will be available to borrow for those who do not already have a paddle. Please wear appropriate rubber soled shoes. The pickleball courts are located at the main campus of Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, Albany OR. Thanks to the Albany PIckleball Club for sponsoring this event.

Lecture: The Physics of Waves Behind our Experience of Sound

Join OSU physics professor Jeff Hazboun for a discussion and demonstration of how the physics of waves affects what we perceive as sound.  Jeff will introduce the concept behind standing waves, and show how different systems will only allow particular types of the standing waves.  Jeff will relate this to our experiences with musical instruments and sound in general.

Tour: Patrick Lumber Manufacturing Hardwoods Facility

July 22. 10:00AM – noon.

Patrick Lumber Manufacturing produces high quality hardwood products for markets around the world. The site sits on roughly 40 acres of land, with a total of 30 employees, along with 7 dry kilns, 3 resaw lines and 2 sorting/staking lines. There is an onsite scale, and shade dry enclosures holding roughly 100mbf of high-grade green lumber. Our Timber Hall was constructed on the hill above the plant site in 2023. From the Timber Hall porch, one can observe mill operations along with a beautiful view of the valley. Please plan to bring a sack lunch to enjoy in the Patrick Lumber Mill Timber Hall following the tour; bottled water will be provided. This tour may be difficult for people who have any difficulty walking (distances, hills, steep industrial stairs…)

Introduction to the meat industry with tour of harvest and processing facilities, smoke cabinet, chill rooms and freezers; retail and seasoning storage. Discussion of U.S.D.A. vs State regulations. Demonstration of Mobile Harvest Truck. Option of visiting store which opens at noon on Fridays.
